Awning & Hopper Replacement Windows
Do you have awning and/or hopper windows in your home? Maybe you’re thinking of installing some but you aren’t sure if they are the best windows for your situation or how you would replace them if they broke. In the right places, these windows can provide exactly the ventilation and access you need.
What are Awning and Hopper Windows?
Not sure if you have awning or hopper windows in your house? These descriptions should let you know if these are your windows.
Awning windows can be big or small, but they hinge at the top and open either inward or outward. This allows for air to enter a room but keeps debris, like leaves and dust, out. It also allows you to have your windows open even when the weather is bad, since the downward slant keeps rain and snow out while still allowing cool air to come in.
Awning windows are most often seen in basements, because they can be placed high in the wall and are easy to open. All you have to do is crank the handle and the window opens. They are also commonly placed above windows that don’t open, like picture windows or extremely large windows. Institutions, like schools, will often place these windows high on the walls of conference rooms or classrooms, so that the room can remain ventilated but the people inside won’t get distracted.
Hopper windows are similar but they hinge at the bottom. They can open outward, but most commonly open inward to permit ventilation while keeping out most debris and weather. These windows are less common than awning windows but are usually used high on walls where other types of windows aren’t very useful.
